Twitter

June 15th, 2007

I think it’s kinda silly, but it’s also kinda fun and it’s growing on me. Lots of people think it’s The Next Big Thing in social networking. I have to admit, I’ve “met” a few interesting people there.

The Butterfly Effect

June 14th, 2007

This is an idea that grew out of chaos theory and is rendered in many different ways but my favorite is “A butterfly flaps its wings in China and three weeks later there is a hurricane in Florida.”

It comes from the notion that in chaotic systems, small differences can expand and multiply through the system and lead to large effects down the line.

In the chaotic system that is my life, I have observed the truth of this idea. A chance remark by a friend ended up changing my life in dramatic ways. Because of a compliment that I didn’t feel that I deserved, I ended up getting on a diet and exercise program which led to the end of my clinical depression which led to me loving my life and embracing the new, including this blog and my emerging e-commerce business which has spurred me to learn so many new and exciting things!

I’m sure if you think about it, you can find examples of the butterfly effect in your life.

Good news and bad news

June 11th, 2007

The bad news is that I messed up my do-it-myself brake job on my car and ended up having to take it to the shop for a new master cylinder. It would have been cheaper just to have them do the brake job from the get-go!

The good news is that I used the time to work on my sterlingsilverboxes.com website and it is really coming along. I also decided that I need to write an e-book on “How to collect Silver Boxes for Fun and Profit” as part of my offerings on the site. My to-do list seems to be getting longer rather than shorter! They may be baby steps, but my first steps usually are and I’m just glad that I’ve taken the first steps to building my e-commerce empire :-)

Onward and upward!

I love the net.

June 9th, 2007

I think it was 1991 when I got my first dial-up account. Early on, someone said to me on IRC that the only thing the Internet would change is everything. It certainly has changed a lot about how I live. Today I started a new business. It cost me about $10 to start and took about 4 hours. I’ll be putting in a lot more time for sure, but it is amazing to me that I can go from thinking about having a business to having one in that short of a time and with that little of an investment.

I’m selling sterling silver boxes as an eBay affiliate. My site has the cryptic title of SterlingSilverBoxes.com. I’m planning on building an empire, doncha know. Stay tuned for more developments!

unfuck

June 8th, 2007

“Dood, I need you to unfuck this order that CornNut fucked up.”

I’m always being asked to unfuck things at work that are fucked up.  I think unfuck is a good word. I like the word even if the process is usually a pain in the neck.

Our deepest fear…

June 5th, 2007

I heard this in the movie, Coach Carter and thought it was cool. I believe the author is Marianne Williamson. Nelson Mandela also used it in his inaugural speech.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. As we let out own light shine, we unconsciously give other people the permission to do the same. As we are liberated from out own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Imagination

June 4th, 2007

Imagination is a very powerful force. When you imagine something, you’ve taken the first step to making it happen. Your ability to make things happen isn’t limited by your talent or your finances or your circumstances. The only limit to what you can achieve is your imagination.

Imagine where you want your life to be. See your destination. Feel what it is like to be there. Imagine how it will be.

Now you can go there.

Dream on my friends, as all good things start in your imagination!

The garden

June 3rd, 2007

The GardenGardening is satisfying in such a direct and fundamental way. I enjoy the whole process. I’ve got carrots, beans, basil, tomatoes, spinach, radishes, lettuce, corn, shallots, cantaloupe,  boysenberries, garlic, sweet onions and potatoes. If you’ve never had a home grown fresh from the garden potato, then you haven’t really experienced what a potato can be.

The good people of the Internet

June 3rd, 2007

I was chatting with a friend and I was reminded that one of the things I love about the Internet is that it shows you how many good people are out there. It seems it’s only the bad stuff that gets talked about in the news, but the net is full of good people doing nice things for each other for no other reason than that they enjoy helping out. Look at all the free help sites and all the forums dedicated to sharing information and advice. Need help with a problem? Look around and someone, somewhere has probably posted the answer to your need. It’s very cool. When I first got on the net so many years ago, I had a million questions about how it all worked and how to take advantage of all the possibilities and I ran across a young fellow by the nick of “crackbaby” who was willing to take the time to help me out. We exchanged many emails in the course of the month or so that he tutored me and one day I asked him if there was any way that I could repay him for all he had done for me and his answer truly touched me. He said, “Yeah, you can repay me by passing it along. Help out anyone you find that asks for help and that will be paying me back.” Like I said, the whole people helping people aspect of the Internet is very cool.
