Success Through Failure

December 30th, 2008

I’m happy to say that day one of my PPC ad campaign was a complete failure and a resounding success!

The Click Through Rate on my ads was abysmal. Less than one percent where four percent is considered minimum performance. But I actually did a search of the competition and revised my ad strategy completely, so we’ll see if that helps.

The resounding success part is that I spent 82 cents on clicks, and made $1.26 in sales! That’s just a hair shy of 35% profit. Cool!

And these had to be “low value” clicks because my ad was so lame. My new ads target buyers, so they should be high value clicks. (Assuming I get any clicks- they are a totally different direction)

If I could make the same sort of conversions on high value keywords, then this could be a very good market.

Now I’m going to have to spend hours setting up individual campaigns for every instance of phpBay on the site. Oh dear.

Still, how many times have you heard of people starting a new business and making a profit the first day?

This is actually not makeup-discounters first dollar, but it sorta feels like it. We’re having fun now!

A New Beginning

December 29th, 2008

So Makeup-Discounters has been languishing along in complete obscurity. I really felt it was too lame to promote.

Enter my new best friend, phpBay for Wordpress and the site now has new life. It looks like a million other commercial sites out there, which is actually a huge step up for me. Kinda sparse and minimal looking, but I’ll be tweaking it as I gain experience in this new way of war.

Check it out: Makeup-Discounters

Now I’m off to start a PPC Campaign and see how that goes.

Water for Birds

December 28th, 2008

I put up a “Bird Bath” near the end of summer. It is really just one of the glazed trays for putting under a flower pot hung in a macrame hanger. Until today, I have never seen a bird use it, but just now I saw a house finch sit on the edge and drink from it. He took three drinks and then sped off. So now I am well chuffed, as they say in England.

Small birds are always so skittinsh and no wonder… they are, after all, “prey.”

My feeder hangs on the porch in a place where I can easily see it either from the sofa or when sitting at the computer.

I’ve been sitting at the computer a lot lately, working on my websites. This new eBay plugin from phpPro is really cool and it’s got me excited about creating humdreds of niche sites. But I’m commited to creating quality sites with lots of good content and that takes time. Makeup-Discounters.com is about making me lose my mind what with all the repetitive making of pages. It’s at 35 pages so far and I think this interation is going to top out at around 40 pages. Once I have all the pages made, then all I have to do is fix the navigation and rework the widgets and it will be ready for action. I’m going to try a small Adwords campaign and see if I can generate some traffic and money. If that goes well, then I will build out the site to include other brands of makeup. It’s all about Stila right now, but I know that Philosophy also has some keywords of opportunity. I’d love to break in to the makeup market because it is huge.

Off to San Diego this afternoon to see Chris and hang out.

eBay Affiliate

December 22nd, 2008

I’ve been an eBay affiliate for over a year, but I’ve really never done much with it. That is about to change… big time!

I just got this new software, the phpBay plugin for Wordpress, and man, it is slick. Using it, I’ll be able to crank out eBay affiliate sites like there is no tomorrow. I’ve already used it to revamp Sterling Silver Boxes and I’ll be redoing MakeUp Discounters tonight.

The more I think about the ways to use this software, the more excited I get about the possibilites.

Onward and Upward!

New Toys

December 20th, 2008

I ordered a new phone. Big deal. The old one isn’t Bluetooth and with the new hands free law and all that, plus the old one isn’t holding a charge like it used to, so the time was right to make the plunge. So a new phone, bluetooth headset and various charging devices are on the way. The anticipation is what passes for excitement in my life.

Doing a lot of updating to Sterling Silver Boxes as it has been generating traffic is natural Google #1 for my targeted keyword phrase. Theme madness. Plus I had to do a manual update to the new Wordpress. Once I get that going I’ll install the automatic update plugin so this should be the last manual update.

Should be a new theme here too sometime today.

Morning Fog

December 1st, 2008

I love foggy mornings.

I love the quiet calm.

I love the peacefulness tempered with the realization that the fog will soon lift and the hidden possibilities of the day will be revealed.
