Levels of Commitment

April 22nd, 2008

One day when I was in college, I was walking across campus and I stopped to listen to a guy who was speaking to a crowd. Your basic man on a soapbox deal. He was, in one way of looking at things, espousing a “religious extremist” message, but he was also talking about philosophical issues that I was studying at the time so I was interested in what he had to say.

He had many interesting things to say, but one that really stuck with me was his take on commitment. Basically, he said if you weren’t willing to die for your beliefs, then you’re just a dilettante and you lack commitment.

That word, that idea… commitment…has become a key idea for me at times.

When I’m faced with a new challenge, it always seems that I end up asking myself what my level of commitment is. How much am I willing to commit to meeting the challenge?

It’s rarely and easy question to answer.
